Raavad’s Gloss on Mishneh Torah, Hilchot Tzitzit, Chapter 1, Halacha 7
Regarding the Rambam’s words, “He takes one white string…” through “on all four corners,” the Raavad writes:
“This arrangement has neither root nor branch (no basis). Why should there be more Tekhelet than white, when white is min kanaf — the same type as the corner of the garment — and with it one begins and with it one ends, yet its wraps are fewer? This is nothing but a great error.
Rav Natronai Gaon, of blessed memory, arranged it properly, in a very beautiful manner, in accordance with what the halacha states. The statement, ‘What is the measure of a chulya? Enough to wrap once, repeat it, and do it a third time,’ refers to Tekhelet. And when the Tanna taught, ‘One who minimizes should not make fewer than seven,’ this refers to the number of wraps: three of Tekhelet and four of white, since one begins with white and ends with white.
First, close to the corner, he ties one knot using a white string and a Tekhelet string. This is what is called the kesher ha’elyon. He then wraps two strings, one white and one Tekhelet, until there are six wraps, and the seventh wrap is made with the white string alone. This is the seven that we mentioned, and together they constitute one chulya. All of these wraps are made around the six strings that hang down from the corner.
In this manner he makes five knots, with a chulya of seven wraps between each knot and the next, as we explained. The custom developed to make one chulya with two knots close to the corner, and two chulyot at the end of the gedil with three knots. In the middle, he wraps without being particular about the exact arrangement, whether the wraps are close together or spread apart, using both Tekhelet and white.”
Notes:
- A chulya is formed by taking one white string and one Tekhelet string together and wrapping them around the remaining six strings three times, while making sure that the first wrap begins with white. Since both strings are being wrapped together, these three turns produce a total of six wraps — three white and three Tekhelet. A final seventh wrap is then added using the white string alone. The white and Tekhelet strings used for wrapping are called the shamashim, and they can continue to be used for the remaining wraps, although there is no halachic requirement to continue using the same strings.
- At the end of each chulya, a single white-Tekhelet string knot is made as follows: wrap one white string and one Tekhelet string together around the remaining six strings, then pass the ends of those strings through the loop that was formed and tighten them.
