א. הגדיל יעשהו חוליות חוליות, כל חוליה משלשה כריכות. ובתחלה יקשור ב’ קשרים סמוך לכנף ויכרוך ז’ כריכות, ויקשור ב’ קשרים אחרים ויכרוך ח’ כריכות, ויקשור ב’ קשרים אחרים ויכרוך י”א כריכות, ויקשור ב’ קשרים ויכרוך י”ג כריכות, ואח”כ יקשור עוד ב’ קשרים, והרי סך הכל ט”ל כריכות כמנין הוי”ה אח”ד, וכמ”ש רז”ל בס’ הכונות. ועשיתי סימן לדבר זה, תן חלק לשבעה וגם לשמונה, נמצא תחלה שבעה כריכות, ואח”כ שמונה כריכות, ואח”כ תעשה י”א כמנין אותיות לשבעה לשמונה שהם י”א אותיות, ואח”כ תעשה י”ג כמנין אותיות תן חלק לשבעה וגם שהם י”ג אותיות.
1. The gedil should be made as separate chulyot, with each chulya consisting of three wraps. At the beginning, he should tie two knots close to the corner and make seven wraps. He should then tie another two knots and make eight wraps, tie another two knots and make eleven wraps, tie another two knots and make thirteen wraps, and then finish with another two knots. Altogether there are thirty-nine wraps, corresponding to the numerical value of Havayah Echad, as Chazal wrote in the Sefer HaKavanot.
I made the following mnemonic for this arrangement: “Ten chelek leshiv’ah vegam lishmonah” — “Give a portion to seven, and also to eight.” Thus, first come seven wraps, followed by eight wraps. After that, make eleven, corresponding to the number of letters in leshiv’ah lishmonah (לשבעה לשמונה), which contains eleven letters. Then make thirteen, corresponding to the number of letters in ten chelek leshiv’ah vegam (תן חלק לשבעה וגם), which contains thirteen letters.
