Tzitzit and Tekhelet: The Rectification of the Sin of the Spies
The mitzvah of tzitzit does not merely conclude Parashat Shelach—it repairs the failure at its heart, the sin of the spies. Rav Yosef Zvi Rimon shows how each of the central themes of that sin—the scouts who toured the land, their distorted seeing, the eyes, the torn garments, and the loss of faith—returns and is set right by the mitzvah of tzitzit: “do not stray after your hearts and after your eyes.” From there he turns to the Tekhelet, the blue our Sages compared to the sea, the sky, and the Throne of Glory, which appears in the Torah forty times: thirty-nine in connection with the Mishkan and only once in the tzitzit. That parallel reveals a deep link between tzitzit and the garments of the Kohen Gadol, teaching that whoever wears Tekhelet wears a kind of priestly vestment—becoming an emissary of the Hashem each and every day.
Tradition or Torpor? Rabbi Abraham Twerski, z”l, on Tekhelet
Rabbi Twerski once recalled how in his childhood, there were some in his community who wore the tekhelet threads produced according to the great Chasidic Rebbe, Gershon Henokh Leiner… A saintly and greatly revered relative of the Twerski family, Rav Mottel, chose not to wear the Radzyn tekhelet, and that was enough to dissuade the young Rabbi Twerski from looking any further into the matter. If Rav Mottel did not feel the need to buck tradition and take upon himself this new practice, then neither would he.
And yet, 30 years ago, when tekhelet from the Murex trunculus sea snail became available, Rabbi Twerski was one of the earliest and most enthusiastic adopters.
